Al & Andrew Westphal's report for the trip: "Well this morning's outing turned out so much better than I thought it might from the forecast, and the company was so good, I have to call the visit to Hansville today a big success. Birding was a challenge with the visibility and sea state, but we did manage to accumulate a respectable slate of 37 species (see the attachment). There were some good sightings too. The swirling flocks of Bonaparte's Gulls in their feeding frenzy were terrific, and we had good cooperation from some of those Loons and Grebes that came close to shore. For patient watchers, there were also a scattering of Pigeon Guillemots and a fair number of Common Murres as well, although at distant ranges."
For the photographer, most birds on the water were beyond telephoto range, & in close was too grey until about the time we shifted to Norwegian Point--when a window of sun allowed good photos of a mixed flock of Dunlin & Black-bellied Plover.
A bonus during our visit was running into Lori Raymaker, Kitsap County Parks' Stewardship Coordinator. She & colleagues were inspecting building cracks. But, we were able to discuss a request from KAS Board Member Lynn Willmott that the bird viewing platform get a ramp so people using wheeled mobility devices could access it. We agreed this seemed like a great project, and noted that the crushed rock put on the trail this past summer sequel to a brush fire would need a top dressing of probably 3/8" minus crushed rock to be rollable, and a concrete curb could be crossed by having a limited amount of fill.
